Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready: “Life is a Pre-existing Condition”
Mike McCready was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease over two decades ago, and as he says in this brief video directed by Jesse Dylan (also behind the 2008 Obama love letter “Yes We Can”), he’s been denied insurance coverage twice. While the Pearl Jam guitarist had the “resources” and “means” to work around the problem, most people don’t—and that’s why he and Dylan encourage you to vote for lawmakers who support the Affordable Care Act.
In an equally tactful statement that accompanied the video’s release earlier this week, McCready and Dylan elaborated on their motivations and message:
We are a musician and a filmmaker, who are also fathers and businessmen, who are living with chronic illnesses. We know firsthand of what we speak. We were also friends with the late Jennifer Jaff who, through her organization Advocacy for Patients, fought tirelessly with insurance companies on behalf of chronically ill patients who had been denied payments or coverage. Our friend Jennifer imagined a day when her services would no longer be needed, when health care for all Americans would be seen as both good business and good values. If you share this vision and these values, watch and share this little video we created as a tribute to Jennifer, and help elect a President this November who shares these values as well.
So you don’t have a medical condition (and don’t love anyone who does)? Haven’t ever been denied insurance coverage? Doesn’t matter. All for Romney and the Republican agenda? Totally fine. The main message, as punctuated by this video’s final frames, is simply to do your part. Vote.
