Last time Christopher Nolan had a new feature in theaters, he was helping save blockbusters, movies, and even summer itself with a three-hour drama about a nuclear scientist. It ruled. Today, he is back in cinemas with his telling of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey and, frankly, epic is the only word that feels appropriate in my vocabulary.
With Die My Love, director Lynne Ramsay transports audiences into a dreamlike state of isolation, maternal turmoil, and creative frustration through the tremendous power of Jennifer Lawrence’s standout performance.
Pity poor Mickey Barnes. Life is pretty terrible for most people in a dystopia, of course, but for Mickey, it’s particularly awful because he just cannot stay dead when he dies. As an “expendable,” he signed up to a life of many deaths and as many resurrections (reprintings).
With his take on Batman, Robert Pattinson is much darker in the role than we’ve previously seen. If you thought Christian Bale’s performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman was too silly in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, I have just the movie for you. With the possible exception of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker movie, this is the darkest Batman or Batman-adjacent movie I’ve seen.
