Seattle Film Critics Society announces 2022 Award Nominees

In a two-hour long virtual broadcast/tweetstorm, the Seattle Film Critics Society unveiled their (our) nominations for the best in 2022 film across several social media platforms. The big favorite? Multiverse family action comedy / drama Everything Everywhere All At Once scored a towering 14 nominations across 21 categories, including acting nods for Best Ensemble, Lead Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Supporting Actress (Stephanie Hsu) as well as the Society’s signature category: Villain of the Year for Jobu Tupaki.

The ten nominees for Best Picture are:

Other high-flying films included The Banshees of Inisherin and Top Gun: Maverick. In addition to a Best Picture nomination Martin McDonagh’s tragicomic story of a severed friendship in rural 1923 Ireland earned 9 nominations with five acting nominations (Colin Farrell for lead, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon for supporting, as well as a Best Ensemble), plus Best Director, Screenplay, and Original Score. Joseph Kosinski’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick earned eight, including Best Picture, Director, Actor (Tom Cruise), and Ensemble with other nominations for Action Choreography, Cinematography, Film Editing, and Visual Effects.

In total, forty films received at least one nomination. Rounding out the list were nominations for All Quiet on the Western Front, All Sorts, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Armageddon Time, Causeway, Close, EO, Fire of Love, Good Night Oppy, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Kimi, Know Your Place, Mad God, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, Navalny, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Saint Omer, Sam Now, Till, Turning Red, The Whale, Women Talking, X, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, White Noise

This year’s awards are dedicated Sheila Benson (The Los Angeles Times) and John Hartl (The Seattle Times), esteemed film critics who lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest. The winners will be announced next week on Tuesday January 17th.
