Undertone brims with promise, but it’s undercooked

Horror movies often tap into the intersection of mortality and grief with a disarming fidelity seldom present in more literal-minded, non-scary mainstream movies. It’s one of many reasons I love the genre. Alongside the rollercoaster endorphin rush and dark escapism that draw me inexorably to them, the best horror films also serve as catharsis of the most profound variety.

Seattle Film Critics name One Battle After Another best film of 2025

This afternoon, the Seattle Film Critics Society (which counts a few of us as members) announced nominations for the 2025 SFCS Awards. Dominating the nominations was Ryan Coogler’s Sinners with fourteen, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another with twelve, and Clint Bentley’s Pacific Northwest-set Train Dreams with eight.

We all made our predictions and picks for the Oscars, but every year more and more voters seem eager to spill the tea and share their votes with whoever will listen. This year, I rounded up as many as I could find to see what they reveal about the state of the race.
